Creating a 5-day Kerala itinerary can feel overwhelming. There’s simply so much to see—and with Kerala stretching nearly 400 km from north to south, poor planning can easily result in spending most of your trip inside a car instead of actually enjoying the destination. A well-paced route is key to making the most of your time.
Day 1: Arrive at Kochi or Trivandrum by Flight
Most major Indian cities are well connected by air to both Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum). That said, flights to Trivandrum tend to be slightly more expensive. A more budget-friendly option is to land in Kochi and travel south by road later in the trip.
After arriving in Kochi, spend the day exploring the city. Book a homestay or Airbnb in Fort Kochi, as it’s close to most attractions. In the evening, take a relaxed walk around the area—visit quaint cafés, watch the iconic Chinese fishing nets, and admire the old colonial architecture.
You can also catch traditional performances like Kalaripayattu, Kathakali, or Theyyam at one of the local cultural theatres.
Day 2: Drive to Munnar or Vagamon
Start early and take a cab to either Munnar or Vagamon. This is your first major choice of the trip.
Munnar is more touristy but offers more sightseeing spots, better roads, and a wider range of quality resorts. Vagamon, on the other hand, is quieter, more laid-back, and ideal if you’re looking for solitude and slow travel.
If possible, book an overnight camping stay on a hilltop. Many stays offer access to hidden streams or small creeks—perfect for unwinding after the drive.
Day 3: Backwaters – Alleppey to Kollam
Take another cab down to Alleppey and board a houseboat for a backwater cruise toward Kollam.
Make sure to book a package that includes meals—especially seafood, which Kollam is well known for. As the boat glides through peaceful canals and palm-lined waterways, you’ll experience one of Kerala’s most iconic landscapes.
After reaching Kollam, take a cab to either Varkala or Kovalam. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either—both offer beautiful beaches and a relaxed coastal vibe.
Day 4: Beach Day & Local Experiences
Start your day slow—head to the beach early, check out surfing lessons, browse the small local markets, or simply relax by the sea. Let this be a lazy beach day, soaking in the tropical sun and ocean breeze.
Don’t miss out on authentic Kerala meals, especially seafood and traditional sadya-style dishes served on banana leaves.
Day 5: Thenmala Visit & Trekking Experience
On your final day, head out early to Thenmala, India’s first planned ecotourism destination, located around 1.5–2 hours from Kollam/Varkala. Thenmala is perfect if you want to end your trip with a mix of nature, light adventure, and greenery.
Start with a guided trek through the forest trails and try out some adventure tourism experiences
By evening, you can catch a flight back to your home from Trivandrum
