So 5 days is more than enough to get a flavor of all the local food of Kerala. Here’s a practical food checklist you can follow during your trip to make sure you don’t miss out on the essentials:
Must-Try Dishes in Kerala
1. Kerala Sadya (Banana Leaf Meal)
A classic, the must-have of all Kerala food. Rice is served with multiple vegetarian dishes like sambar, avial, thoran, olan, pachadi, pickles, papadam, and finished with payasam. Make sure to have the rice in three courses with different accompaniments each time.
It differs from the Kerala Meals, which is like a lighter version of the Sadhya. Usually, Sadhya is not available year-round, so you might have to make do with the Kerala meals.
2. Puttu & Kadala Curry
This is as healthy and light as breakfast can get. Steamed rice-and-coconut puttu paired with spicy black chickpea curry. It’s available in almost all breakfast places, but choose a Chaya Kada for the most authentic and homely version.
From personal experience, adding a little sugar to the mix enhances the flavor. Trust me, it’s a game changer!
3. Appam & Stew
Another breakfast classic, this dish has its roots in the vibrant coastal communities of Kerala. Soft, lace-edged rice pancakes are served with a mildly spiced coconut stew (vegetable, chicken, or mutton).
4. Kerala Fish Curry (Meen Curry)
This tangy and spicy curry is made with coconut, red chilies, and kudampuli. It tastes best with matta rice (Kerala red rice). Be warned, the best-tasting versions are usually very spicy, but you can cut the heat by pairing it with some rice and Mooru (a curd-based light curry).
5. Meen Pollichathu
One of those dishes every guide you meet will insist you try. Remember, it’s a fancy version of the fish fry. Fish marinated in spices, wrapped in banana leaf, and pan-fried. It’s a great dish to try on a houseboat in the backwaters or at the traditional liquor establishments called toddy shops.
Personally, I’m not a big fan of this, but do try it once for the experience. You might just love it!

Sweet Treats to Savor
And let’s not overlook the sweets! Kerala is known for its delectable desserts. Try the traditional payasam, a sweet rice pudding made with milk and jaggery. It’s a delightful way to end your meal.
